How Much Does a DCP Cost? 2026 Prices Compared

Most DCP labs charge by the minute of finished runtime, and the rate depends on two things: how fast you need it and whether you want 2K or 4K. The published rates we checked in October 2026 start at $3 a minute for a slow 2K job and reach $45 a minute for same-day 4K. Short films usually land on a minimum charge instead of the per-minute rate, so for a festival short the minimum matters more than the rate. Cinematiq's Instant DCP is $8 a minute with a $99 minimum, the same for 2K and 4K, and is typically delivered in under 24 hours. Below is every lab's price list side by side, plus the extras that quietly change the total.
If you're new to the format, a digital cinema package is the set of files a cinema server plays: JPEG 2000 picture, uncompressed audio and the XML that ties them together. Every lab below makes the same kind of file. What you're paying for is speed, support and how much of the prep work the lab does for you.
What do DCP labs charge in 2026?
Here are the published prices from five labs, including ours. Each competitor price was read off the lab's own website on October 9, 2026. Labs that don't publish prices online aren't listed.
| Lab | Price per minute | Minimum or flat rate | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cinematiq Instant DCP | $8/min, 2K or 4K | $99 minimum per order | Typically under 24 hours. Rush adds $99 and typically delivers in about 6 hours. |
| Cinematiq Custom DCP | Features: $10/min 2K, $15/min 4K | Shorts up to 20 minutes: $200 flat 2K, $300 flat 4K | 5 business days, with paid rush tiers |
| SimpleDCP | 2K: $15 (5-day), $20 (3-day), $25 (next day), $40 (same day). 4K: $20, $25, $30, $45. | No minimum published | 5-day to same day |
| DCP for All | $3 to $6 (5 business days), $6 to $10 (3 days), $9 to $14 (1 day), $12 to $18 (same day). The ranges span 2K to 4K. | $100 set-up fee for films under 40 minutes | 5 business days to same day |
| Pure DCP | 2K: $5 (5-day), $8 (3-day), $12 (1-day). 4K: $8, $12, $18. | $150 minimum on every order | 5-day to 1-day |
| Tree Falls Post | $5/min for most other 2K jobs. 4K from a 4K source: $10/min. | 2K under 10 minutes: $99 plus tax. 2K from 10 to 30 minutes: $175. 2K features up to 100 minutes: $385 plus drive or upload. $150 minimum on per-minute 2K, $250 on 4K. | Not stated on the rate page |
The cheap headline rates are always the slowest tier, and the price climbs as the deadline gets closer. And every competitor in the table charges more for 4K than for 2K. Instant DCP is the only rate in the table that's the same for both.
Why does a short film cost more than the per-minute rate suggests?
Because almost every lab has a floor. A 10-minute short at $5 a minute would be $50, but Pure DCP's own examples put a 10-minute 2K short at $150 on every turnaround tier, because of its $150 minimum. DCP for All adds a $100 set-up fee to anything under 40 minutes. Tree Falls Post skips the per-minute math for shorts and charges flat rates instead.
So for a short, compare minimums and flat rates, not per-minute rates. Instant DCP has a $99 minimum too. It applies to any film short enough that the per-minute rate would come in under it, and it's the same for 2K and 4K. Longer films pay $8 for each minute of runtime.
What makes a DCP more expensive?
Turnaround is the biggest lever. At SimpleDCP, 2K goes from $15 a minute on the 5-day tier to $40 a minute for same day. If your festival deadline is three weeks out, the slow tier at most labs is fine. If it's this week, the price of speed varies a lot from lab to lab, and that's where comparing pays off.
Resolution comes second. The DCI specification requires every cinema system to play both, and a 4K projector scales a 2K DCP up to fill the screen. Choose 4K when your master is 4K and the venue can show it, or when the festival asks for it.
The rest of the bill is extras, and this is where quotes drift apart.
- Captions and subtitles as separate timed-text tracks, rather than burned into the picture, are an add-on everywhere. At Cinematiq that's Custom DCP work, $150 for a short.
- Encryption costs extra. SimpleDCP charges $10 per venue for key delivery after the first ten keys. DCP for All charges $100 for encryption plus $20 per key afterward. Cinematiq's KDM package is $100 and includes ten keys.
- Physical drives are expensive. DCP for All lists a CRU drive with a Pelican case at $230 and Tree Falls Post lists one at $210. Cinematiq's CRU drive package is $250. Many festivals accept a download link, so check before you buy a drive.
- Download links aren't always free. SimpleDCP charges $37.50 for a link up to 50 GB, DCP for All charges $20 for a 30-day link, and Tree Falls Post charges $1 per gigabyte with a $25 minimum. Pure DCP includes cloud delivery. Instant DCP includes the download link in the price.

Can you make a DCP for free?
Yes. DCP-o-matic is free, open-source software that makes standards-compliant DCPs, and plenty of filmmakers use it well. What it costs you is time: learning the settings, encoding on your own computer, checking the result and formatting a delivery drive. We wrote a separate guide on when DIY makes sense and when to pay.
The risk with any DIY DCP is finding a problem after the festival has already tested it. The common ones are wrong audio channel order, a drive the cinema server can't read and a name that doesn't follow the naming convention. Our post on why DCPs get rejected covers each.
How long does it take to make a DCP?
It depends on the tier you buy. Lab turnaround in the table runs from same day to five business days. Instant DCP is typically delivered in under 24 hours after your upload finishes, and rush typically gets it to you in about 6 hours. Custom DCP takes 5 business days, because an engineer handles it by hand.
Add your own time on top. Exporting a clean master, uploading it and testing the finished DCP all take time, so don't plan around the lab's number alone.
Which option should you choose?
Pick by what your film needs, then by deadline, then by price.
- If your film is a short or a feature with stereo or 5.1 audio, subtitles burned in (or none) and a festival that takes a download link, Instant DCP is built for that film. You order online, upload one file and typically get a download link back in under 24 hours.
- If you need closed captions, 7.1 or Atmos, encryption, multiple versions or a shipped drive, you need a human-made DCP. That's Custom DCP at Cinematiq, and the labs in the table above handle it too.
- If you have more time than money and like learning the tools, DCP-o-matic works. Budget a few evenings and test the result before you ship it.
Whichever you choose, get the price in writing with every extra listed, and ask whether the download link is included. In the table above, that one line ranges from free to $37.50.
