DCP Naming Convention

Some Digital Cinema servers only show a limited number of characters on their display screens. If the title of a composition is long, much of the information may be cut off or not visible unless you scroll to a second page. This makes locating a specific composition difficult if you have multiple titles. It’s especially confusing when you have multiple trailers as well as the feature with the same name.

Digital Cinema Naming Convention

The Digital Cinema Naming Convention is a system designed to standardize the naming or locating of Digital Cinema Packages. This convention creates a descriptive text string for specific versions of a movie, which is used in the Composition Playlist (CPL). While this naming method is widespread, the industry is transitioning to use the more detailed and machine-readable SMPTE Standard CPL Metadata. The convention was developed in response to the issue of Digital Cinema servers truncating long movie titles, which could lead to confusion. To address this, the convention uses abbreviations and a specific order to display essential information clearly and consistently.

The table below illustrates the components of the naming standard.
